Sophia Handaka

Sophia Handaka is co-founder, lead member of the Organizing Committee and Host of the yearly CoMuseum Conference, organized by the Benaki Museum, the U.S. Embassy and the British Council, as well as Curator of World Cultures at the Benaki Museum.

Holding a DPhil from the University of Oxford, Sophia is a Social Anthropologist specialized in Museums and Material Culture with 20 years of experience in museums and cultural heritage. During her years at the Benaki Museum she has planned and implemented numerous exhibitions, publications, cultural events, public programs, research and scientific projects, development projects and cultural synergies. For 2017-2019 she collaborated with the City of Athens through the R.O.C.K. project, as an expert for the development of a specific methodology to enhance access to culture by empowering bottom-up cultural initiatives.

Sophia has been invited in selection juries, workshops, special consultations and public talks. For 2005-2007 she taught at the University of Thessaly, Dept of History, Archaeology & Social Anthropology. She is member of Bosch Alumni Network and a 2019 fellow of the International Visitor Leadership Program. She is founding member and Vice-President of the NPO HOPEgenesis, for the fight against birth deficit in Greece.
