MThe goal of the conference is to foster a dialogue in two critical areas of interest for the museum community: the design and production of interpretive technologies, and the development of strategies to attract new and diverse audiences.

Keynote speakers of the conference are Nancy Proctor, Head of Mobile Strategy and Initiatives, Smithsonian Institution; and Allegra Burnette, Creative Director of Digital Media, Museum of Modern Art, New York. Both are pioneers in the development of communication programs and new technologies for museums. The conference also features distinguished Greek experts, who are members of the academic and museum communities.

Allegra Burnette

Allegra Burnette is the Creative Director for Digital Media at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, overseeing the design and production of all interpretive applications, such as the Museum’s website (MoMA.org), info-kiosks and digital libraries. For the Internet, Allegra has been redesigning the Museum’s website, creating special sections for specific categories of audiences, such as teachers and children, and managing several award-winning online exhibitions. Its Digital Media team aims to expand access to MOMA content through iTunes, YouTube and other applications, and to have the Museum’s free audio program through multiple distribution channels. Outside of the Internet, Allegra has created special digital applications for Museum venues, and has designed the MoMA.guide program, a series of interactive info-kiosks. She has a postgraduate degree in exhibition organizing and design at the University of the Arts, where she also teaches in the master’s program in Museum Media.ar

Nancy Proctor

Nancy Proctor is Head of New Media at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She holds a PhD in American Art History and has worked in film, curation and art criticism. She created her first web exhibition in 1995. In 1998 she collaborated with Titus Bicknell and co-founded TheGalleryChannel.com to present pioneering online web tours and propose complex museum and gallery searches around the world. TheGalleryChannel was later acquired by Antenna Audio, where Nancy was Head of New Product Development from 2000-2008, and developed multimedia tours, sign language tours, podcasts, and mobile apps. She also worked with the Travel Channel’s new app development team. Since 2008, Nancy has worked at the Smithsonian American Art Museum while working as a program coordinator for the Museums Computer Network (MCN) and as a co-host of the Tate Handheld conference. Nancy manages the MuseumMobile.info website and is the author of Curator: The Museum Journal.

Nikolaos Avouris

Nikolaos Avouris is a professor of software technology. Research interests. Software technology, with emphasis on Human-Computer Communication, Human-Computer Interface Design Methodologies, Artificial Intelligence, Experienced Systems, Distributed Intelligent Systems, Machine Learning Techniques and the Application of these Techniques to Advanced Computing Problems, of the Environment, Education and Industry. He is responsible for the Human-Computer Interaction Research Team. Studies. He is a graduate of the School of Electrical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. He holds a master’s and a PhD from the University of Manchester, MA. (University of Manchester, UMIST Institute of Science and Technology). Professional experience. He has over 20 years of academic and research experience. 1983-1984; Researcher at Pan. Manchester. 1985-1986; Assistant Professor, Department of Informatics, TEI Athens. 1986-1993; Researcher at the Joint Research Center (JRC) of the Committee of the European Communities, Spain, Institute of Systems Engineering and Informatics and the Institute of the Environment, Department of Environmental Informatics. 1993-1994; Computer Engineer at National Electricity Distribution Center (DEH), Athens, Greece. 1994-2001; Associate Professor University of Patras. 2001- Professor, Head of Human-Computer Interaction Research Team. Publications. He has edited 4 books and is the author of more than 40 articles in international scientific journals and books and over 100 technical reports, tutorials, scientific conference presentations, etc.

Dr Georgios Alexopoulos

Dr. George Alexopoulos is a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past (IPUP), University of York, United Kingdom, and is currently a Visiting Research Fellow in the Cultural Heritage Initiative (February-July 2011). He holds a degree in Archeology and Art History from the University of Athens and a M.A. from the Institute of Archeology at University College London (UCL). The topic of his doctoral thesis at UCL was on the management of cultural heritage in Mount Athos. His research interests focus on the following areas; Cultural Heritage Management, Museology, Public Archeology, Cultural Heritage Studies and Applying Quality Research Methodologies.

Dr Costis Dallas

Kostis G. Dallas is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture at Panteion University, where he teaches courses on cultural practices and cultural management, the theoretical and methodological background of engaging with cultural heritage, museums and their audiences, and cultural informatics. He also holds the title of Associate Professor in the School of Information (iSchool) of the University of Toronto where, from 2008 to 2010, he taught postgraduate courses in Museum Collection Management, Ethics, Leadership and Museum Management, and Informatics’ role in Museums. In 2010 he directed the Master of Museum Studies program of the same institution. In addition, he is a Research Associate of the Digital Editing Unit (MOFE), which belongs to the Athena Research Institute of Information Systems and Simulation, supervised by GSRT, with the main aim of highlighting his contribution to the work of the journal. Since February 2011 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Acropolis Museum.

Daphne Dragona

Daphne Dragona is a curator of digital art. She has collaborated with centers, museums and events in Greece and abroad such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the Center for Digital Culture “Foúrnos”, the Alta Technologia Andina Center (Peru), the Laboral Centro de Arte y Creacion Industrial (Spain) and the Transmediale Festival (Germany). She has participated in lectures and presentations at festivals and conferences, and her articles have been published in books and magazines from different countries. She is a PhD candidate in the Department of Communication and Media of the University of Athens.

Niki Dollis

Niki Dollis was born in Australia and came to Greece in 1999. She holds a master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Melbourne (1980) and a master’s degree in Public Relations. Prior to her arrival in Greece, she worked for more than 20 years in the areas of health, education, migration and social welfare in local government, state and federal government, as well as non-governmental Australian agencies. She is specialized in policy analysis, program and service planning as well as project implementation and management. In 2000 she began her collaboration with the New Acropolis Museum Construction Organization (OANMA) as the project promoter and communications director. Since 2009, when the Museum opened to the public, she has been coordinating a series of operational actions and supporting the implementation of the Museum’s programmatic planning and development. ​

Elena Lagoudi

Elena Lagoudi is a museologist with years of experience in designing and managing communication programs and new technologies. Elena graduated from the Archeology Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and after completing a master’s degree in Museum Management at the University of Greenwich, she worked for 14 years in London at various cultural institutions, such as the National Gallery, Tate, ICA & Royal Opera House. As Head of the National Gallery’s Information Department since 2004, she has been responsible for managing the museum experience of 5 million visitors per year. Passionate about innovation and connecting with young audiences, she has worked on innovative digital communications programs, such as the first UK-wide off-the-wall tour of the museum, part of The Grand Tour’s communications project, and Love Art, the first museum application for iPhone in the world that exceeded 400,000 downloads. Elena has written articles and lectured at international conferences on digital communication, mobile interpreter systems, cultural experience information management and museum collections interpretive strategy. She teaches the Laboratory Seminar ‘Museums & Digital Culture’ at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki’s master’s degree Program ‘Museology’.

Dr Maria Economou

Maria Economou is a permanent assistant professor (Museology and New Technologies) at the Department of Cultural Technology and Communication at the University of the Aegean, where she is the Head of the Research Laboratory of Museology. She studied Archeology and Art History at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She completed her master’s degree in museology at the University of Leicester in England and completed her doctoral dissertation at the University of Oxford (with a Fellowship from the Lambrakis Institute of Studies). She has taught at the Universities of Manchester (School of Art History and Archeology) and Glasgow (Institute for the Application of Advanced Technology in Humanities) and has worked as an assistant curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum of Art. She has been collaborating with cultural institutions in Greece and abroad since 1993 and has published numerous articles on museology and culture, in particular on the application of new technologies in museums, public evaluation and study, and digitization of collections. In 2003 she published her book “Museum: A Warehouse or a Living Organization? Museological Concerns and Issues” from Kritikí publications

Evi Sachini

Evi Sachini is a Dr. Chemical Engineer at the National Technical University of Athens. Since 1997 she is Head of Strategy and Development of the National Documentation Center (ECB), with significant experience in designing, coordinating & monitoring research and technology projects, designing high-demand infrastructures in technologies that converge to international standards and incorporate new open access services to the knowledge, development and dissemination of digital content. She has been an Expert and National Representative to the European Commission on Research & Innovation, Digital Libraries, Exploiting Research Results and Strengthening the European Research Area. As a member of the Greek scientific community, she has been actively involved in the formulation of national policies in the above areas for the past 15 years. She has participated in many international forums and conferences on Research and Innovation, the Information and Knowledge Society, as an invited speaker, both in Greece and abroad. She was responsible for the design and coordination of the Greek version of the Dewey Decimal Classification and the “Greek Scientific Publications 1993-2008”. She is a member of the General Council of Libraries, General Archives of the State and Educational Television, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Research and Technology Network.

Dr Despina Tsiafaki

Despina Tsiafaki is a Dr. in the Department of History-Archeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and holds a master’s degree in the same department specializing in Classical Archeology, Byzantine History and Art History. She was curator of antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum, where she was involved in the implementation of new technologies in culture. In 2000-2006 she was a professor of classical archeology at the EOT School of Guides. Since 2002 she is a Research Fellow at the (Institute of Cultural and Educational Technology) IPET and responsible for the Department of Cultural Heritage. She has been involved in various archaeological excavations and since 1994 she is a regular scientific collaborator of the University excavation in Karaburaki, Thessaloniki. She has participated in international and national programs related to the preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage. She has published a monograph on the myths of Thrace in Attic art, she is the editor of a volume on Color in ancient Greek art and more than 70 of her works on archeology, ancient Greek art and cultural technology have been published in national and international scientific volumes, magazines and conferences. Her current research interests are in Ancient Greek Ceramics and Architecture, Northeast Aegean Archeology, Archeometry and Cultural Technology with emphasis on the development of cultural databases, 3-D reconstruction, use of GIS, contemporary touring and touring. She is an Assessor of national & European programs in Brussels, Greece, Cyprus and Serbia and is a Reviewer of articles in international scientific journals in the fields of archeology, art history and cultural technology.

Dr Dimitrios Charitos

Dimitrios Charitos is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication and Mass Media at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where he teaches courses in human-machine communication, interactive design, visual communication and digital art. He studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and C.A.A.D at Strathclyde University (Glasgow). He holds a PhD in interactive design and virtual environment design (Stathclyde-1998). He has over 70 publications in books, scientific journals and conference proceedings. He has participated in 15 art exhibitions in Greece and the UK in the field of digital audiovisual installations.
